Disturbing noise
A neighbor who tap dances at night, music pollution from Amish cars or a yodeling caretaker?
There is life in the built urban environment, and where there is life, there is also noise.
It doesn't have to be disruptive. We can help you determine whether the noise exceeds the legal limits.
Noise research and measurement
Living makes noise, but it doesn't have to be disruptive. For example, we measure the noise coming into residential apartments, whether it's from an upstairs neighbor who's into clogs and tap dancing, a wild car race on the next street, or various technical gadgets. You'll receive a report from the measurement, which you'll review with an expert.
All measurements are made using equipment that meets current standards.
The most common action limits
1
Noise caused by ventilation units or other similar technical equipment at night
Noise must not exceed LAFmax 33 dB at night (between 10 pm and 7 am) if it is continuous. Occasional noise must not exceed LAFmax 45 dB.
The measurement is fast if the measurement environment is free of interference.
2
Music and consumer electronics
Nighttime music or other noise caused by entertainment electronics from outside your own home must not exceed 25 dB as an average sound level over one hour and A-weighted. The noise must be distinguishable from the background noise in the room. A little over an hour is reserved for the measurement. The measurer will start the measurement after 10 p.m. (or when the noise starts) and will stop the measurement after at least an hour.
3
Other action limits
To avoid hearing damage, the noise level must not exceed LAeq4h 100 dB, LAFmax 115 dB or LCpeak 140 dB. If these are exceeded, noise exposure must be limited either by protecting hearing, reducing noise, limiting the time of activity causing noise, or moving further away from the sound source.
When action limits are exceeded
We will be the first to tell you if the noise action limits are exceeded. The report we provide will also indicate whether the limits have been exceeded, by how much, and what type of noise it is. If you wish, we will also provide a separate expert opinion, for example if the noise is caused by a rental property or traffic.
If the noise comes from a space under your control, we will also guide you in soundproofing.
We never tell your neighbors about the noise measurement.
